5 Attributes of God

Lenus Bible Study | 5 Attributes of God

These are 5 attributes of God and yes I know there are much more but I decided to just focus in these 5 so we can get a better understanding of God.

You should know that these attributes of God are exclusive, I mean that those only apply to God.

Now, the importance of knowing this attributes is that it will help us to understand and to know our Father God in a better way. Also knowing these will change our relationship with Him.

5 Attributes of God

1. God is omnipresent

This means that God is everywhere. But we shouldn’t confuse his presence with the manifestation of his presence.

For example, God might be near you but that doesn’t mean that He manifest himself in your life.

Where can I go from Your Spirit?
Or where can I flee from Your presence?
If I ascend into heaven, You are there;
If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.
If I take the wings of the morning,
And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
Even there Your hand shall lead me,
And Your right hand shall hold me.
If I say, “Surely the darkness shall fall on me,”
Even the night shall be light about me;
Indeed, the darkness shall not hide from You,
But the night shines as the day;
The darkness and the light are both alike to You.
— Psalm 139.7-12 NKJV

King David affirms that doesn’t matter where we go. God will be there.

This means that wherever we go, God will be with us to bless us. But this also means that we will never be able to hide from God to do bad things.

2. God is omniscient

This means that God knows everything. And sure, God knows our needs but the scripture also says that He is our Father and so He waits until we ask Him.

O Lord, You have searched me and known me.
You know my sitting down and my rising up;
You understand my thought afar off.
You comprehend my path and my lying down,
And are acquainted with all my ways.
For there is not a word on my tongue,
But behold, O Lord, You know it altogether.
You have hedged me behind and before,
And laid Your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
It is high, I cannot attain it.
— Psalm 139.1-6 NKJV

Psalms again. Obviously, king David knew God very well and that’s why he is a great example.

If there’s someone who really knows us, that is God. He knows what we think and what we say even before we do. Daniel was so smart to say “I don’t know but I know the one who does”.

We can do the same because now that we know more about our Father, then we can ask Him to teach us and to explain us some things that nobody else can understand.

3. God is omnipotent

This means that God can do it all. Really, everything. Even those things that we think are impossible.

O Lord God of hosts,
Who is mighty like You, O Lord?
Your faithfulness also surrounds You.
You rule the raging of the sea;
When its waves rise, You still them.
You have broken Rahab in pieces, as one who is slain;
You have scattered Your enemies with Your mighty arm.
The heavens are Yours, the earth also is Yours;
The world and all its fullness, You have founded them.
The north and the south, You have created them;
Tabor and Hermon rejoice in Your name.
You have a mighty arm;
Strong is Your hand, and high is Your right hand.
— Psalm 89.8-13 NKJV

The universe serves and obeys God. So there’s nothing greater than God.

“For with God nothing will be impossible.”
—Luke 1.37 NKJV

4. God is transcendent

God doesn’t depend on the creation actually is the creation who depends on God.

Who has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand,
Measured heaven with a span
And calculated the dust of the earth in a measure?
Weighed the mountains in scales
And the hills in a balance?
Who has directed the Spirit of the Lord,
Or as His counselor has taught Him?
With whom did He take counsel, and who instructed Him,
And taught Him in the path of justice?
Who taught Him knowledge,
And showed Him the way of understanding?
Behold, the nations are as a drop in a bucket,
And are counted as the small dust on the scales;
Look, He lifts up the isles as a very little thing.
And Lebanon is not sufficient to burn,
Nor its beasts sufficient for a burnt offering.
All nations before Him are as nothing,
And they are counted by Him less than nothing and worthless.
To whom then will you liken God?
Or what likeness will you compare to Him?
The workman molds an image,
The goldsmith overspreads it with gold,
And the silversmith casts silver chains.
Whoever is too impoverished for such a contribution
Chooses a tree that will not rot;
He seeks for himself a skillful workman
To prepare a carved image that will not totter.
Have you not known?
Have you not heard?
Has it not been told you from the beginning?
Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth?
It is He who sits above the circle of the earth,
And its inhabitants are like grasshoppers,
Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain,
And spreads them out like a tent to dwell in.
He brings the princes to nothing;
He makes the judges of the earth useless.
Scarcely shall they be planted,
Scarcely shall they be sown,
Scarcely shall their stock take root in the earth,
When He will also blow on them,
And they will wither,
And the whirlwind will take them away like stubble.
“To whom then will you liken Me,
Or to whom shall I be equal?” says the Holy One.
Lift up your eyes on high,
And see who has created these things,
Who brings out their host by number;
He calls them all by name,
By the greatness of His might
And the strength of His power;
Not one is missing.
— Isaiah 40.12-26 NKJV

I think that this whole Scripture says it all. The time could end and things could disappear but still God would not be affected.

5. Eternal God

Maybe you won’t get to know your offspring but God will and He will take care of them. All of them will be guided by God.

My days are like a shadow that lengthens,
And I wither away like grass.
But You, O Lord, shall endure forever,
And the remembrance of Your name to all generations.
— Psalm 102.11-12 NKJV

God is not affected by time, because God created time only for the creation, this means, for us.

For a thousand years in Your sight
Are like yesterday when it is past,
And like a watch in the night.
— Psalm 90.4 NKJV

That’s how God is. He has unique qualities and the most extraordinary part is that He is our Father. In the Scripture says that even a human father gives their sons what they ask for, so even greater is our Father God.

Now that we know His power we know who are we talking to through our prayers. We can be honored to be listened by the creator of all things.

I just want to finish with a small prayer:

Thank you God for your love. I cannot understand how someone like you can love me so much. I think there are no words to express how much it means to me that you care. I’m so grateful for having you by my side. I want to know you better so show yourself to me, let me understand who you are. Amen.

If you haven’t done the prayer of faith and you would like to be part of God’s family, then I invite you to make the best decision you would ever make, that is [Prayer of Faith].
