Let’s start a new series with Steven Furtick with this topic of Lions & Lizards & Lies that is focused on getting free from all kinds of anxiety.
This new series is called Triggered, taking back your mind in the age of anxiety. Therefore, if you have ever felt some anxiety in your life then this series is for you.
Lions & Lizards & Lies
5 In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” 6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. 8 Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.1 Peter 5.5-9 NIV
Everyone around the world is going through some kind of worry and when you listen to the situation of each person you will discover that everyone has their own battles. You’re not the only one with problems.
Moreover, many of these problems are often self-induced, which means that we suffer because of our own stupidity.
In the passage we’ve read, verses 6 and 7 appear together in the original version, which means that the advice ”cast all your anxiety on him” goes hand in hand with ”humble yourselves”.
This means that it’s not possible to get rid of your anxiety if you don’t humble yourself first.
For the Jews, the ”God’s mighty hand” mentioned in v. 6 makes reference to the sovereignty of God when he freed his people from slavery in Egypt.
When God commissioned Moses, Moses told him that Pharaoh would not let his people go unless a powerful hand compels him. (Exodus 3.19)
For many of us, the hand of God implies comfort but for those who know what this implies they know that it is really a confrontation because God opposes the proud and gives grace to the humble, and all this takes place under the very hand of God.
When Peter speaks of the powerful hand of God in v.6, which is related to the confrontation towards pride, he says it from his own experience as we can verify with Matthew’s gospel.
21 From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life. 22 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!” 23 Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”Matthew 16.21-23 NIV
The Peter that Matthew is talking about is a younger version of Peter than the Peter we read in 1 Peter. That young version liked to have control over everything and that’s why he preferred to follow his own plans instead of God’s plans.
Let’s take back what Peter was telling us:
8 Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.1 Peter 5.8 NIV
When Peter tells Jesus what he should do he was drunk with his own thoughts.
Actually, in this age of information, it is easy to get drunk on so much information without realizing it. In this state, we are excessively weak.
That is why Peter warns us about the devil. Also, I should clarify that the scriptures never said that the devil is a lion but that he is as scandalous as a lion because it is based on lies.
While the enemy of God is pride, our enemy is the devil. Always accusing us and waiting for us to fail.
The lizard brain is known in psychology as the part of our brain that thinks through our fears and such thoughts are usually very scandalous inside of our mind.
The devil is a lizard that uses the lizard brain to scream out loud your fears so he can prevent you from continuing with your path. The devil uses fear to paralyze you.
We need to regain control of our mind.
I hope you have also liked this preaching as much as I do. I will continue this series with the new teachings of Elevation Church.
